Legal / Safety Issues

There are Blind Sailing clubs in over eight different countries.  I’ve incorporated many of their same safety regimes into my own field trial practices.  The main issues are safety to those on the boat and others on the water.  For this reason, having sighted spotters to serve as back-ups is crucial.

Communications is the next big issue.  Having a clear understanding of who says what and when is crucial.  Similar to when I down-hill ski with a sighted guide following, maintaining strict adherence to communications protocols is essential for everyone’s safety.

As with sailing, operation of a power boat by a person with a sight disability is not against the law.  The only requirement in Canada to operate a power boat is that you possess a Pleasure boat Operator’s Certificate, which I do, in addition to my marine radio operator’s certificate.
